It was always a fascination for Vidya Madhavan to step into the world of business. Having been raised in the Indian subcontinent, she naturally was brought upon the idea that she would eventually get into the factory business since powerful giants like the Tata group exist.
She was what we call the model student in her school and always topped her exams and ended up being a mechanical engineer in India and recently secured a place at the Stanford Business School.
Everything was going perfectly as planned until she decided she wanted to create something different, something unique. Yes, she still very much wanted to do business but not the traditional ones she thought she would do.
That is when the idea of Schmooze popped into her head. It is an app focused on matchmaking via memes and machine learning that brings people with the same humor together. This is known as the humor algorithm.
Well, this idea is not that new! It was founded several years ago when as an analyst of McKinsey, Vidya was contemplating whether she wants to go to school in California or not. She sent cold emails to ten random people, found on LinkedIn, who supposedly were grads or students from US business schools. The intention was to seek advice if they think going there would be beneficial or not.
She got only one reply and said they exchanged about two hundred emails in two days and all of them were technically jokes!
Well, this might come as a surprise to you but Vidya is now married to that cold-email recipient. According to her, it is their common sense of humor that made them hit it off right away. That is when this idea started tingling in her brain and Schmooze was born.
Recent Update…
It eventually started as an app to begin new friendships. But, then it went viral and people went crazy searching for their ideal matches on the app. Schmooze was then modified as a dating app for Gen Z that works on humor algorithms. Ever since Schmooze blew up and settled in the hearts of the youth who were tired of swiping right and left on people on other dating apps.
Well, it is not as big as other dating apps or social media platforms but a beta program during the late summers done by 200 students from Stanford has made more than 10,000 people download the app around the entire country.
In this app, people are swiping left and right on memes instead of people. You can get access to over 5000 memes in the beta mode itself. Think how many more memes you can get when the program becomes available for the globe and gets ready for content moderation.
Presently, 200 memes could be added every day and the other ones are deleted. Well, as per Vidya’s statement “No one is interested in the American elections anymore”.
With the help of machine learning and tagging connected with user bios, Schmooze begins the smooth process of finding you a match.
Well, some individuals are interested in science, some in literature, some in finances, and so on. There are similar choices when it comes to dark humor as well. Schmooze just studies and analyzes your pattern and shows you several memes.
When you swipe memes that you like, it connects you with strangers with similar choices. If you like the match you can schmooze them and if you don’t like it, you can snooze!
Well, the app is still in the making process; it would be a long road before it is completely developed. Even in the initial stages, it is giving competition to other already existing dating apps! Also, it has caused them to step up as well.
